Going on a Sailing Tour? How to Be Respectful to Marine Animals

Date:

Sailing is a fun activity. The best thing about sailing is that it can be enjoyed solo and with groups of any size, be it family or friends.

Those who are planning to go sailing must remember that they have a responsibility on their hands. They should respect the local flora and fauna.

There are plenty of spots around the world that are great for sailing, and Ko Olina is one of them. Located about an hour’s drive from downtown Honolulu, Ko Olina has some stunning views of the ocean and mountains. Ko Olina has four serene beaches for tourists to enjoy. There are also plenty of activities to enjoy, like snorkeling, luxury cruises, and plenty more.

For snorkeling enthusiasts, searching for the best snorkeling in Ko Olina will bring up plenty of results.

This article is for those who love sailing. To ensure you have a positive impact on the environment and have fun, here are five essential points to consider:

1. Maintain a Safe Distance

Never get too close to wildlife while snorkeling in Ko Olina because this might annoy or scare them. Getting too close to the animals can result in stress as well as interference with their normal activities.

It is advisable to try to not disturb what you are seeing. During the sailing tour, try using binoculars rather than getting nearer to the animals’ habitat. This is important when it comes to large animals such as dolphins and whales. Do not try to get close to or touch any form of sea life. Such actions can negatively impact and even scare them.

2. Don’t Feed the Animals

Marine animals, especially turtles, MUST NOT be fed. The act of feeding such marine animals changes their feeding behavior, thus making them helpless and relying on such meals given to them by people, which are rarely healthy.

This is particularly important to keep in mind when snorkeling in Ko Olina. In many places, feeding marine animals is prohibited because it hurts the ecosystem.

3. Don’t Try to Touch the Marine Animals and Corals

Many marine beings, including corals, are fragile and can be easily hurt if touched. The body oils and bacteria from the skin may affect reefs and other marine life negatively. It is advisable to wear a wetsuit/rash guard and avoid touching the reef.

It is also important to remember that both of these ecosystems can be permanently harmed by human touch.

4. Ensure You Are Attentive To Your Equipment

If you plan to snorkel while sailing, ensure that your snorkeling gear is well-fastened. Freely floating gear can impact the reef and negatively affect marine life.

Loose gear, for instance, can tether the coral colonies and exert immense pressure on the reef foundation brought about by waves or currents, gradually eliminating the existence of reef-building organisms.

Avoid the use of toxic chemicals by applying reef-safe sunblock. Normal sunscreens contain chemicals that would cause color changes and, ultimately, kill coral reefs.

5. Educate Yourself and Others

It is recommended that you spare time and study various species of water animals and their characteristics. As a result of comprehending their position in the ecosystem, one feels a greater level of admiration for them.

Inform others regarding the correct ways of engaging with marine life. This encourages participation in local conservation projects and acknowledges efforts to develop initiatives aimed at the protection of marine habitats.

With these tips, one can enjoy a memorable sailing experience without harming the environment. Your actions are significant, and by being careful with sailing, you contribute to the conservation of the underwater world for future generations.
