5 Easy Ways to Be Eco Friendly When Moving

Date:

Moving can be so exciting, but also quite a pain in the neck. There are so many things to consider and you have to deal with a bunch of stuff. Not to mention you have to leave the place you are used to and start building a new life in a completely new house, town or city, or maybe even state. You might feel exuberant, but you might also feel sad and sentimental. No matter how you feel about it, there are no reasons to not be eco-friendly while you are moving. Let’s see what some easy ways to do so are.

Avoid the dumpster

You are moving and there are probably some or numerous items you feel like throwing away because you no longer need them. However, those who are sensitive to the environmental impact know that putting it all in one large dumpster is not the best idea. It is simply not an eco-conscious decision. The first thing you can do is sort everything right away. Make different heaps for recycling. Put paper things in one box and glass in another, for instance. It will be much easier for you! If there is something you can reuse, do not vacillate. If you have clothes you no longer want, you can donate them all. This way, you are doing one more generous thing!

Use containers you already have

The first thing you think of when someone mentions moving might be all those boxes you will have to use for packing items in. Yet, this does not have to be the case at all. Sure, you can use a box or two, but there are other things to consider for this purpose as well. Plastic bins, dresser drawers, gym with duffel bags and reusable grocery totes – all of this can be used for packing. If you have few things that can fit important items inside of it, you can fill it up quickly before packing it. This will save a lot of space!

Limit the number of trips

Naturally, when we have to transport our items, we need to use a certain vehicle (mostly big trucks), which increases air pollution. There’s not much you can do about it, because you cannot carry all of your things on a bike. But you can try to limit the number of trips you take. You can rely on ute hire services to find what matches your needs and get as big a vehicle as you can.

A garage sale is a good idea

Not all the things in your possession can be recycled or donated. However, you do not want to take them with you either. What you can do is hold a garage sale. There are three advantages to it: you get rid of the unwanted stuff, you earn some money and other people find something they like and will be happy by buying it. This is not just eco-friendly but also budget-friendly. It can also speed up the moving process.

Buy energy-efficient products

You have been planning to replace your old appliances for some time, but now that you are going to another place, the timing has never been more right! Not only can you buy some new quality stuff (maybe from the garage sale money) but you can also pay attention to get energy-efficient products.  You can consider buying power strips in order to help you manage power for your appliances. Also, if you choose to buy compact fluorescent light bulbs, you will be happy to know that they use 70% less energy. Choosing this kind of product has a lot of environmental benefits. They may attract us because they reduce our bills, but they also reduce the amount of energy that needs to be generated through the burning of fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. This leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions and they contribute less to global climate change.

As you can see, it is not difficult to think green and express your eco-friendly values in many ways. As long as you do not throw things away in a dumpster but donate and reuse them and pay attention to the number of trips you take, you are doing a good deed.
