Wwwxxxl.com R134a Réfrigérant Charge: All You Need to Know

Date:

No matter which AC system you look at today, all of them are powered by the same stuff: refrigerant. Typically, this substance is found as a gas or in a liquid state. This substance draws hot air, absorbs it, and evaporates as cool air.

One of the most common refrigerant choices we see these days is R134a. While many people have been using chlorofluorocarbon for the AC system, it’s been replaced in various air conditioning applications by R134a.

R134a Refrigerant

Formation of R134a

The molecules of R134a are ethane based with carbon, fluorine, and hydrogen. The good thing about R134a is that there is no chlorine in it. As a result, you can easily use it without any risk.

Safety of R134a Refrigerant Charge

Another massive reason why people like R134a Refrigerant Charge is its utmost safety. If you look at the safety rating, it has ASRAE’S (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers) class A1 certification. The A is the lowest toxicity range, and 1 is the lowest flammability rate. Most of the HFC refrigerants like R134a come under this category now. As a result, this gas is environmentally friendly too.

Features of R134a Refrigerant Charge

  • This refrigerant has a high vaporizing temperature.
  • R134a Refrigerant Charge’s default temperature sits at 1418 degrees Fahrenheit or 770 degrees Celsius.
  • R134a has a moderately lower GWP potential.
  • There are all the good qualities of refrigerant, like high thermal stability, low boiling point, and chemical resistance.
  • Apart from car AC’s, you can use R134a with all the mineral-based refrigerators, using R-12.
  • The nontoxic and nonflammable nature makes this refrigerant extremely safe and environmentally friendly for users.
  • The high vaporizing temperatures allow R134a to maintain a high refrigerating effect per kg.

How to recharge your car AC system with R134a refrigerant?

Now that you know about R134a refrigerant and want to put it in your car’s AC system, let me show you how you recharge it. Most of the cars manufactured after 1993 should support this refrigerant. However, you can check the owner’s manual to be sure.

  • Step 1: Wear safety glasses and gloves to avoid frostbite from the refrigerant. Before recharging, run the engine and AC for about five minutes with the door open.
  • Step 2: Most car AC system has two ports, a high-pressure and a low-pressure service port. The R134a pressure gauge coupler will only connect with this port.
  • Step 3: When recharging, ensure the compressor is engaging, and the clutch pulley is spinning. It ensures the compressor is working and the refrigerant is recharging.
  • Step 4: After the recharge, you need to check the AC system pressure. It should stay around 40 psi; anything significantly more indicates an AC problem.
  • Step 5: After the recharge, disconnect the top-off kit and put the cap back on the low-pressure service port.

What are the available alternatives for R134a Refrigerant Charge?

I have already mentioned the reason behind the popularity of the R-134a Refrigerant Charge. But if you need it available or looking for a replacement where you cannot use R134a Refrigerant, here are some alternatives.

  • HFO-1234yf: Hydrofluoroolefin can be an alternative, considering the low GWP. This refrigerant falls in the A2L safety class and is widely used for mobile air conditioning applications.
  • HC-290: This refrigerant mostly consists of hydrogen and carbon. Though it falls under the A3 safety class, it’s widely used for freezers and household refrigerators.
  • R-513A: We are back on the safety train with R-513A. This alternative falls in the A1 safety class with R134a Refrigerant and provides the closest performance.
